8th Season at Charlotte
Coach Mentzer enters his first year as the Tarpons Head Coach as he looks to build on the tradition of excellence in Punta Gorda. This will be Coach Mentzer's 8th overall season on the Tarpon Varsity football coaching staff. He is a 2010 graduate of Charlotte High School. He was an outstanding student athlete where he played outside linebacker and led the defense to consecutive regional finals in 2008 & 2009. He was also an all-state Honorable Mention, and also a member of the 2010 State Championship track team. He attended Florida Gulf Coast University earning degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Masters of Business Administration, as well as a Masters in Education. He served as FGCU's Student Body Vice President in 2014-2015 and was selected to the FGCU class of 2015 Hall of Fame.
Coach Love enters his 1st Year on the Tarpons Coaching Staff and is a 2001 Graduate of Charlotte High School. The 2022 season will be his 4th year coaching High School Football, with stints as a Head Coach and a Coordinator both in South Florida and Southern California's Trinity League (Mater Dei, St. John Bosco, Servite, etc.) Prior to that, Coach Love worked for 17 years in college athletics, most recently mentoring the quarterbacks of the Kansas Jayhawks. Throughout his career in college football, Love has coached several positions, including quarterbacks, wide receivers, defensive backs, and special teams, as well as spending time as a department head in Video Operations. Coach Love graduated in 2006 from the University of Central Florida with a degree in Education, where he worked as a undergraduate assistant on the Golden Knights coaching staff.
Coach Rebol is a CHS graduate and will be entering his 1st year as the Co-Defensive Cooridnator and 8th year overall on the Charlotte High coaching staff. Rebol was an All-State linebacker and All Arena baseball player for the Tarpons. Coach Rebol went to Florida State University on a full football scholarship in 1992. At Florida State, he was a part of the 1993 National Championship Team and was named Captain his senior year. Coach Rebol is a native to Charlotte County and is a partner in a local civil engineering firm, Banks Engineering. He and his wife Callie have two children, Cutter and Rylee.
Offensive Line Coach
Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Coach Wiseman went to Arkansas State University and graduated with a BSE in Physical Education. Coach Wiseman played football for the Red Wolves (Indians) and was a 2-time All-American center. He is beginning his 11th year at Charlotte High, previously working at CHS from 2002-2011. He is going on his 26th year of teaching and 31st year of coaching. Coach Wiseman currently serves as the Offensive Line Coach and Head Boys' Weightlifting Coach.
Co-Defensive Coordinator | Secondary
Coach Balcomb will be entering his 5th season on the Tarpons staff, and his first as Co-Defensive Coordinator. A graduate of Charlotte High, Balcomb has over 20 years experience coaching in Pop Warner and FSYFL, including over 200 wins, 8 conference titles, 3 regional titles, 2 state titles, and one National Championship. He also currently serves as the Director of Operations at Crossroads Hope Academy
Defensive Line Coach
Antwan is a native to Punta Gorda and is beginning his first season as the Tarpons Defensive Line coach. Allen went on to play at Webber International University in Babson Park, FL and was apart of the 2014 Sun Conference Championship team. Allen resides in Punta Gorda making a career in community services allowing him to work with various local youth organizations in Charlotte County. Allen is inspired to continue the Tarpon Tradition.

Head Track Coach
A native of Freeport, Pennsylvania, Coach Scott is proud to call Punta Gorda home for the past four years. He is entering his 12th year teaching and coaching overall, his fifth at Charlotte High School. In January 2020, he was tabbed the Head Track & Field Coach taking over the program from long time veteran coach, Jerry Voss. Before arriving in Punta Gorda, Coach Scott coached at Flagler - Palm Coast's Matanzas High as well as at North Carolina 4AA State Champion, Richmond Raiders in Rockingham, North Carolina. A three-sport standout (football, basketball, track & field) at Freeport Senior High, Coach Scott earned All-Area, All Conference and Honorable Mention All-State by the Pennsylvania Football News Association during his junior and senior high school years. In 2004, Coach Scott was selected for the annual Pennsylvania East - West All Star game in Johnsontown, Pennsylvania. He was recruited by Coach Paul Johnson's staff at the United States Naval Academy in 2003 and accepted an appointment to continue his football and education in 2004. While at Navy, he was position coached by current Army Director of Football Operations, Clayton Kendrick - Holmes and veteran coach Buddy Green in the secondary through 2004-2005 season as a young defensive back/punt returner. Opting for an early deferment in 2006, he immediately enrolled at Gannon University fulfilling remaining dual degree requirements pursing teaching and coaching in 2009.
Head JV Coach
Coach Mike Williams is a graduate of Charlotte High School from class of 2001. While at Charlotte High school he played under Coach Massolio. He also played football and baseball while in high school. Mike has been a part of the Charlotte High School basketball program for the past 16 years. He has been a part of 8 district titles. For the past 10 seasons he has been the JV coach. His current record is 182-25. He is currently Punta Gorda Middle School’s head coach. Coach Williams is also part of the Charlotte Swish AAU program. He loves to be a part of the basketball program and is looking forward to working with the football program as well. From Tiny Tarpons, to the Charlotte Swish, and on to the High School. He is grateful to be a part of it all to see these kids grow into amazing young athletes.
Joe has been shooting games and practices for the Tarpons since 2013. He began shooting JV games in which his son (Ryan CHS '17) was a player. Much to his son's dismay, Joe was called up to varsity by former coach Binky Waldrop. He's happy to be part of the CHS Tradition and Family and expects to continue filming as long as he can climb the ladder to the top of the press box.
Duane McCurdy is beginning his tenth year as a Tarpon football coach. He originally moved to Charlotte County in 1987 making a career in the construction industry. Coach McCurdy has twelve years of experience coaching with the Pop Warner football organization that he has brought with him to CHS. Married with five children, all of whom are former Tarpons, McCurdy is thankful to be a part of Tarpon Tradition!
